Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam: Exploring Rice Wine

LOSE YOURSELF IN THE WORLD OF RICE WINE WITH A CUSTOM TASTING IN SAIGON

Một, hai, ba, vô! We were deep in the Vietnamese jungle as our guide enthusiastically taught us to cheers in Vietnamese. He’d learned we were curious about rice wine and decided we couldn’t possibly continue our discovery of the spirit without being able to raise our glass with the locals who so generously poured our shots.

The lesson served us well and we were soon toasting along with the locals, surprised to see us wandering so far off the tourist trail, who would hand us shots of their homemade ruou. With glasses raised, we shouted together and quickly fell in love with rice wine. Not so much for its taste per se – it’s quite potent and sharp – but for the camaraderie found around a shared bottle.

As we made our way back into the city, we knew the rice wine experience would be a little different. We said goodbye to drinking with strangers along the road, searching instead for a little more education.

We had spent a few blissful nights in Nguyen Shack Can Tho where we learned their Saigon location was home to a museum of rice wine. The small lobby is lined floor to ceiling with an array of rice wines, infused with medicinal herbs, fruit and more.

So, we grabbed a seat, stared sampling and soon wrote more about it for More Than Food Mag. Follow the link below to read the story and find out more.
